Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRSv) and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PEDv) are two viral diseases that have substantial economic repercussions for affected producers. Preventing these viral diseases requires careful preventative strategies, including strict biosecurity measures, to prevent disastrous outbreaks.
This project proposes the development of an easy-to-use paper-based sensor for the detection of PRRSv and PEDv. Briefly, a paper dipstick assay will be designed that allows for the simultaneous, and independent, detection of PRRSv and PEDv. Akin to a Covid-19 rapid antigen test, or pregnancy test, the dipstick will have three lines, a PRRSv test line, a PEDv test line, and a control line. Aptamers are small single stranded pieces of DNA that bind to their respective targets with high affinity and selectivity. Having a rapid, easy-to-use paper test will allow for early detection at the point-of-need and timely intervention preventing the spread of infectious disease.
