Ontario’s swine sector markets almost six million hogs annually. The health and welfare of these animals is of paramount importance to producers at all times, especially during emergencies. In reviewing the discussion paper, while there is mention of several types of disasters, there is no mention of the impact of these disasters on agriculture and the impact that the disasters would have on animals, food security, industry infrastructure, and farmer and employee mental health.
Ontario Pork recommends that agriculture disasters and their impacts be further discussed and included in the Act.
